WHAT WE’RE SEEING
27 – 28 July, Melbourne, Australia
Open House weekend began in London in 1992, but it is a concept that has since been replicated all over the world. Melbourne will be holding its sixth weekend on 27 and 28 July. And with its ballot system for the most popular properties, it is important to start thinking about registering your interest early. This year 111 buildings are to be opened, with highlights in the modern houses category including a multiple-housing project from 1935-6, Cairo Flats designed by Taylor Soilleux & Overend in Fitzroy; Edgewater Towers (1959–1960) by Mordecai Benshemesh, where there will be a tour through the lobby and to the roof to take in the views of the bay and Luna Park as well as one or two apartments; plus SJB Architects’ award-winning 2012 Malvern Hill housing scheme, which will be open for tours of the common areas and two fully furnished display units by the architects. While private houses are few and far between on the list of open properties, Rexroth Mannasmann Collective’s recent renovation of the house Little Black Number looks worth a visit.
